PARASYTE: THE MAXIM-Review

Even if we can't comprehend other life forms, still without a doubt, they are neighbours, who deserve our respect. Earth is a place that consists of many life forms. Is it human arrogance if we think we understand other life forms, because we are superior of them all?

Maybe humans are the closest thing to demons alive - Shinichi Izumi

Parasyte centers on a male 17-year-old high school student named Shinichi Izumi, who lives with his mother and father in a quiet neighborhood in Tokyo, Japan. One night, strange worm-like creatures with drills as a 'head' called Parasytes appear on Earth, taking over the brains of human hosts by entering through their ears or noses. One Parasite attempts to crawl into Shinichi's nose while he sleeps, but fails as Shinichi wakes up, and enters his body by burrowing into his hand instead. In the Japanese version, it takes over his right hand and is named Migi.

Because Shinichi was able to prevent Migi from travelling further up into his brain, both beings retain their separate intellect and personality. As the duo encounter other Parasites, they capitalize on their strange situation and gradually form a strong bond, working together to survive. This gives them an edge in battling other Parasites who frequently attack the pair upon realization that Shinichi's human brain is still intact. Shinichi feels compelled to fight other Parasites, who devour humans as food, while enlisting Migi's help.

Parasyte, revolves around the theme that, every life form that belongs to earth has the right to live freely even if they are parasites, although contrastingly it also showcases that in the end humans are the ones who are victorious.

While watching this anime, many a times it would make you feel that actually the viruses on the surface are humans. When their life's on line they showcase their true nature and they can take any life for their own survival. What makes us human is our emotions, but still humans, they kill each other and fight among themselves. But it is our emotion, that differentiates us from other life forms, but what if parasites start having emotions like we do? Even if they have emotions or they start behaving like humans, still they are a totally different species, we cannot really understand them. The same is shown in case of Shinichi and Migi, Migi was a part of his body, his partner in every fight but even until the end Shinichi felt he never understood Migi.

About the characters, the protagonist Shinichi Izumi, his overall character development throughout the series is interesting, from a simple, kind and sensitive boy to someone who is fighing for humanity and and also fighting within himself. The other important character Tamiya Ryoko or Tamura Reiko is a parasite but she is the one who gives the actual meaning to whatever is happening throughout the series. Characters like Kana and Murano could have been more involved in the story but maybe this is how the author wanted to keep them.

This anime is in one of my #mustwatch list. This anime is very engaging, sometimes it can get creepy but one of the best in #horrorfiction genre and also its got only one season with 24 episodes, in my opinion, its worth your time.
